The first step in understanding and managing your emotions comes with recognising exactly which emotion you are feeling.
We pretty much spend most of our day being assailed by emotions. We are never really sure of the nature of what we are feeling. Instead, we are just carried along by lots of 'feelings', the nature of which we never really take time to consider.
But if we don't think about what is happening to us, we are pretty much nothing more than animals. You see, being human means we can reflect, we can think...
So that rage you feel when a car cuts you up, is that really anger? Or is it just a spike in the day, an annoyance?
And when you feel embarrassed as you stand up to give a speech to colleagues, is that really embarrassment? Or is it just a little self awareness, something that does nothing more than make us feel a little uncomfortable?
Basically, the first step to dealing with your emotions is recognising what they truly are. Most of the time they are a lot less major than we think they are.
And now that you are thinking about your emotions, rather than just suffering them, let's start talking about dealing with them.
In the next post.
